CBI court sends 1st JPSC chief to 2-year jail for Rs.13.56L pilferage
Ranchi, July 28 -- A special CBI court in Ranchi has sentenced the first chairman of the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC), Dilip Prasad, to two years' imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs.1 lakh in a 21-year-old embezzlement case involving Rs.13.56 lakh, a civil court advocate said on Sunday.
The advocate close to the matter stated that the sentence was pronounced on Saturday and that a detailed order is yet to be uploaded on the court's website.
"The court held Prasad guilty of awarding the tender for OMR sheet scanning to an L-2 company. It sentenced him to two years' imprisonment after concluding that his actions led to a loss of Rs.13.56 lakh to the JPSC. In addition to the jail term, the court imposed a fine of Rs.1 lakh on him. The same punishment was also awarded to two officials of the company who benefited from Prasad's actions - Sudhir Jain and Surendra Jain," the civil court advocate said.
Prasad's advocate, A.K. Kanth, confirmed the order.
"We are not satisfied with the order. It will be challenged before the Jharkhand high court," Kanth said.
The civil court advocate said that all the convicts were granted bail after the sentencing. "After pronouncing the sentence, the court granted bail to all the convicts. They went to their respective homes. This was permissible as the court has the power to grant bail in cases where the sentence is up to three years," the advocate added.
A CBI official aware of the matter said the FIR was registered nine years after the crime, and the final arguments were held on July 21 this year....
