Cannabis worth Rs.70 lakh seized by Rohtas cops
SASARAM, Nov. 19 -- Rohtas police on Tuesday seized a huge quantity of cannabis valued at Rs.70 lakh and hidden among cotton bales inside a truck near Malhar village under Chenari police station of the district. The truck, registered in Dhanbad district of Jharkhand and parked near a dilapidated house, was also seized, police said.
Rohtas superintendent of police (SP) Raushan Kumar, on a tip off regarding the huge consignment of the contraband, formed a special team under Chenari station house officer (SHO) Ranjan Kumar. The team raided the place and found a pick-up truck, covered with a tarpaulin sheet.
Police searched and found six bags, hidden among cotton bales. Upon opening, each bag, weighing 26kg, contained 25 packets of cannabis, totalling 150 packets and weighing 156 kg. The contraband, rated Rs.45,000 per kilogram in black market, was worth Rs.70 lakh, the SP said.
The driver had escaped and villagers could not say about the identity of the driver and owner of the truck, which had been duly seized in presence of a magistrate.
A case under sections 8(c), 20(b)(ii)(c), 22(c), 25 and 29 of the Narcotics Drug and Psychotropic Substance Act was registered against the unidentified owner and driver of the vehicle and police were taking further action, the SP said....
