Candidate, four others disrupt rural election, booked: U'khand cops
Rudrapur, July 26 -- Five people, including a woman zila panchayat candidate, have been booked for allegedly disrupting the polling process in Bazpur block of Udham Singh Nagar district during the panchayat elections held on Thursday, officers aware of the matter said.
The police action was taken following a complaint filed by the presiding officer at the affected polling booth, they added.
According to officials, the incident took place at around 3pm at the polling booth located at the Government Inter College in Harsan village. The presiding officer, Pankaj Singh, a librarian at Pantnagar University who was on duty during the elections, alleged that candidate Uma Joshi entered the booth along with her supporters and created a ruckus.
She accused the polling staff of vote rigging, which led to heated arguments and disruption of the voting process, the officials added.
Polling was halted for nearly half an hour as chaos unfolded at the booth. On receiving information, senior officers rushed to the site to bring the situation under control and ensure that voting could resume peacefully, police said.
Bazpur tehsildar Amrita Sharma confirmed that an FIR has been lodged against Joshi and her supporters based on the presiding officer's complaint. She said the candidate's actions disturbed the polling, created panic among voters, and interfered with the duties of election officials.
Inspector Praveen Koshiyari of Bazpur police station said, "Joshi, along with Kheem Singh Danu, Diler Randhawa, Sanjay Jetha and Vimla Devi have been booked under various sections of BNS. These include charges of voluntarily causing hurt, assault, obstructing a public servant in discharge of duty, disobedience to public servant's orders, criminal intimidation, and intentional insult, in addition to violations under the Public Representatives Act."...
