PATNA, May 24 -- The State Election Commission ( SEC) is likely to hold the by- election for 2,635 posts in the three-tier panchayat raj institutions (PRIs) in June following the approval of the schedule of the polls sent to the panchayati raj department for approval, officials said on Thursday. The posts in which by-election is scheduled to be held include 840 gram panchayat members, 63 posts of mukhiya, 72 posts of panchayat samiti members, eight posts of district board members, 1,569 posts of gram kutchery panch and 83 of sarpanch, gram kutchery. The maximum vacancies of gram kutchehry members is attributed to mainly to resignations put by the elected members who apparently feel the post has not much executive powers unlike other posts in the PRIs like gram panchayat member or mukhiya, which comes with considerable administrative and financial powers at the grassroots level of local self government.
