BJP woos Pasmanda Muslims, promises party posts, poll role
PATNA, July 1 -- The BJP on Monday organised a Pasmanada Muslim Samaroh to woo the backward sections of the Muslim community, that forms 80% of total 17% Muslims in Bihar. In a rare first, the party promised such Muslims positions within party organisations as well as representation in electoral politics.
As assembly elections are only a few months away, all political parties in Bihar are in fact reaching out to the Muslim community whose robust presence assumes crucial importance in deciding the outcome of polls.
"I reassure the Pasmanda community that the BJP will now ensure their participation in politics as well," said BJP state president Dilip Jaiswal at the event organised at the Atal Auditorium at the BJP state headquarters.
Jaiswal said that the unique characteristic of the BJP is its commitment to taking all religions, communities, and sections of society along. The party works with the slogan "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas" (Together with all, development for all, trust of all). Without naming anyone directly, he targeted the opposition by saying that although politics has long been played in the name of Muslims, no genuine efforts were made to uplift the Pasmanda Muslims.
Jaiswal said that the very term Pasmanda means "those who were left behind," but no one tried to bring them forward. They have faced continuous discrimination. Most importantly, while they were frequently used in politics, they were never given political representation.
On this occasion, BJP Minority Morcha state president Mohammad Kamruzama Ansari and state media in-charge Danish Eqbal were also present and addressed the gathering.
Before the Lok Sabha polls, All-India Pasmanda Muslim Mahaz (AIPMM) has warned more than 50 sub-castes of Muslims to beware of political parties, including BJP, for their sudden love. They have demanded that Dalit Muslims and Christians be included in the scheduled caste (SC) category and reservation for SC category be increased.
Ali Anwar, former Rajya Sabha member from JD-U, who recently joined Congress and is founder president of AIPMM, said BJP and other parties have started showing special love for Pasmanda Muslims. "Instead of misleading Pasmanda Muslims, the Narendra Modi government should take necessary action to include Dalit Muslims and Christians in SC category and increase reservations for SCs in jobs and education," he had said.
The BJP's plan to reach out Pasmanda community started after PM Narendra Modi, while addressing his party's national executive meeting in Hyderabad in July last year, suggested that party leaders extend their support to deprived and downtrodden sections of all communities. He also advised BJP to take out a "sneh yatra" (affection rally).
"The BJP's hope of winning the support of at least a section of Pasmandas stems from the belief that they are economically, socially, and politically weak and impatient with the hegemony of upper-caste Muslims," said Eqbal.
"We have been organising meetings with them and they have benefitted from different central schemes like Ayushman Bharat, LPG subsidy and free ration. This has helped us win the faith of Pasmandas," said a BJP leader....
