BJP must give proof or apologise: Ex-CM
Dehradun, Dec. 26 -- Former Uttarakhand chief minister Harish Rawat on Thursday marched towards the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state office in Dehradun along with his supporters, demanding proof or an unconditional apology over an alleged AI-generated video that he claims portrayed him as a "spy" and a "traitor".
According to people familiar with the matter, they were stopped at the police barricades before the state BJP office, where they continued the protest.
Addressing supporters during the march, Rawat said he had been depicted as a "spy and a traitor" in the video and asserted that the BJP must either substantiate the allegations or issue a public apology. "They have shown me as a spy and a traitor. They should either submit proof or apologise on this issue," he said.
On Tuesday, Rawat had lodged a formal complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Dehradun, alleging that the BJP was circulating an AI-generated deepfake video to malign his image and incite communal disharmony. In his complaint, Rawat stated that the video contained controversial words and visuals relating to Hindu and Muslim communities and was a deliberate attempt to create "dissatisfaction and disharmony" between the two groups.
"I have been depicted in an objectionable manner to portray me as a traitor (rashtradrohi) in this AI-generated video," Rawat said , adding that such content was aimed at damaging his reputation ahead of elections.
Speaking further, Rawat said that with elections approaching, the methods of targeting him had changed. He recalled that during the previous election, the CBI had conducted searches at his residence and alleged that similar pressure tactics were being repeated. "This time, a massive political attack is being launched against me using AI to create a false narrative," he said.
Rawat claimed that several forces uncomfortable with his political agendas for the state were behind the alleged campaign against him. "I know many forces who do not like my agenda for Uttarakhand. I am a thorn in their side," he said, adding that attempts were also being made through social media operators to target him.
He also alleged that some "government-sponsored newspapers" were being circulated by BJP workers to the homes of his acquaintances, claiming it reflected the ruling party's desperation. On the issue of alleged demographic change, Rawat challenged the BJP to constitute an independent social audit team to study changes since the formation of the state and publish a white paper. He claimed that 75% of the demographic change had taken place during the BJP's tenure. "I went to the BJP office to demand proof of the allegations. I will raise this demand repeatedly. The BJP is not afraid of me, but of love for the state that I have," Rawat said, urging people to join him in what he termed a fight for the state's identity, resources and dignity.
In response, BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan said Rawat's march to the party headquarters showed a lack of faith in the legal process and was politically motivated. Chauhan said Rawat had first approached the police, expressing faith in the law, and then staged a protest the very next day, calling it a "premeditated strategy". Chauhan reiterated that the BJP had neither created nor circulated the video in question. "The party has already clarified that the video has nothing to do with the BJP," he said, adding that the BJP would respond legally to the complaint filed by Rawat....
