PATNA, June 15 -- A political row was triggered over the portrait of Babasaheb B R Ambedhkar on Saturday following BJP and NDA partners accusing the RJD chief Lalu Prasad of "insulting'' the Dalit icon over a purported video during RJD chief's 78th birthday celebrations recently. Lalu turned 78 on June 11. Addressing a press conference, Dy CM, Samrat Choudhary accused RJD chief of 'insulting" Babasaheb and played a video clip of the incident that took place when the former railway minister was celebrating his 78th birthday earlier this week. In the video, the ailing leader can be seen seated on a couch with his feet placed on a sofa nearby. A supporter enters the room carrying the portrait and places it close to Prasad's feet before greeting the RJD chief. "This is testimony to the fact that Lalu Prasad holds Dalits in contempt and has no respect for the greatest leader from the depressed classes. He can have even pictures of gods placed at his feet", alleged Choudhary. The deputy CM also claimed that the RJD supremo's "arrogance" had caused old associates like Nitish Kumar and George Fernandes to part ways. The incident also evoked outrage from Dalit leaders in the BJP like cabinet minister Janak Ram and state unit vice-president Anamika Paswan, both of whom came out with strongly worded statements. Several JD(U) leaders including state president Umesh Kushwaha and union minister and HAM(S) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi also accused RJD chief of showing disrespect to Ambedhkar's portrait. However, leader of the opposition Tejashwi Prasad Yadav countered the accusations by BJP and other NDA partners as part of the ruling coalition's attempt to spread misinformation. "RJD chief has always respected Babasaheb and there have been large number of statues constructed during the RJD rule in Bihar," he said....
