BJP, Cong trade barbs as slugfest on heats up
Dehradun, Dec. 29 -- The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has accused the Congress of seeking political mileage through "unverified" claims in the Pauri receptionist murder case. The Congress, however, called the case a "systematic murder of justice".
The BJP said that until concrete facts emerge from the ongoing inquiry into the viral audio and video linked to the case, political parties should exercise restraint, refrain from irresponsible statements and allow the investigation and judicial process to run their course.
BJP state media in-charge Manveer Singh Chauhan expressed regret over what he described as the "politicisation" of the tragic case. Conducting a "social media trial" based on "unverified and illogical allegations", he said, was extremely unfortunate.
"Every party should make responsible statements on such a sensitive and serious issue. Attempts by people to indulge in social media lynching of leaders and the party based on unverified allegations cannot be justified," Chauhan said.
He added that cases had been registered against those circulating the viral videos and that an inquiry was underway. "Everyone needs to be patient," he said.
Chauhan said that an earlier SIT investigation had led to the culprits' conviction, and the case was now under the consideration of the high court.
He questioned the opposition's demand for a CBI inquiry, asking how could the Congress seek such a probe when it often questioned the central agency's credibility.
"The truth is that Congress is not concerned about justice for the deceased girl. Its sole objective is to gain political mileage from the social media controversy. By doing so, it is repeatedly insulting the soul of the girl," Chauhan alleged.
He said the opposition should present any credible evidence before the investigating agency or the court and accused the Congress of using the issue as a "stepping stone" to revive its political fortunes. "The people of the state have rejected such attempts in the past and will do so again," he added.
He further said the court had already rejected the demand for a CBI probe and upheld the SIT investigation, yet the Congress continued levelling allegations without any factual basis.
"Based on an AI-generated video, the Congress is now trying to malign senior BJP leaders. Sometimes it claims to be a victim of AI conspiracies; at other times, it spreads misinformation against others. The public will not forgive this double-faced character," Chauhan said.
Meanwhile, Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal launched a sharp counterattack on the BJP government, alleging that justice had still not been delivered in the case years after the "heinous and heartbreaking crime". "This raises serious questions about the intentions, policies and ethics of the BJP government," Godiyal said.
He alleged that the murder was not only a crime but also a "systematic murder of justice" carried out under a "power-protected system". Godiyal claimed that the BJP government had shielded the accused and that questions had been raised about the roles of senior party leaders, yet no impartial probe had been conducted.
"Who and why is the BJP afraid of? Why is the government running away from a CBI investigation?" Godiyal asked, alleging that if the truth surfaced, "the entire facade of power would crumble."
The Congress leader further alleged that the government had attempted to destroy evidence, protect the accused and mentally harass the victim's family....
