Bihar: Massive fire breaks out in Kaimur wildlife sanctuary
SASARAM, March 27 -- A massive fire broke out late on Wednesday in the forests on Budha Pahari within the Kaimur Wildlife Sanctuary in Rohtas district. The fire engulfed dry bushes, grass, and fallen leaves, rapidly escalating into a raging inferno in a matter of moments, officials said.
Although there was no damage estimate by Thursday evening, flames and plumes of smoke were visible from several kilometers away. However, there were fears that the blaze had caused significant damage to the flora and fauna.
Upon receiving reports of the fire, Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Rohtas, Stalin Fidal Kumar immediately dispatched teams to the scene, comprising forest department fire-fighting experts, forest guards, and fire brigade personnel. Due to the rugged and inaccessible hilly terrain, fire tenders faced immense difficulties reaching the fire-affected areas. The sanctuary is located in the famous Kaimur Hills range. The DFO said that, following intensive efforts carried out throughout the night, the spread of the fire was brought under control. Despite strong westerly winds and high temperatures, teams of forest guards are striving to completely extinguish the fire and ensure the safety of the wildlife.
The DFO added that, prima facie, human negligence appears to be the cause of the fire; however, orders have been issued to conduct a thorough investigation to ascertain the actual cause.
