Bihar govt signs MoU with Bhashini to translate Kaithi script records using AI
PATNA, July 5 -- In a significant step towards preserving linguistic heritage and improving public access to historical records, the Bihar government's Revenue and Land Reforms Department signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Digital India Bhashini Division (DIBD) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY).
The MoU was signed in the state capital in the presence of Bihar's Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena and Additional Chief Secretary of the Revenue and Land Reforms Department, Dipak Kumar Singh. The agreement was formally signed by Amitabh Nag, CEO of Digital India Bhashini Division, and Jai Singh, Secretary, Revenue and Land Reforms Department.
This collaboration focuses on the AI-powered transliteration of historical documents written in the now-obscure Kaithi script into the Devanagari script. Many old land records in Bihar are written in Kaithi, making them inaccessible to most people today. The initiative aims to unlock these documents for the broader public using Bhashini's advanced AI language tools.
To support the implementation, a BHASHINI Rajyam Workshop was held on Friday at the Survey Training Institute. The workshop brought together key officials, technical experts, and stakeholders for knowledge sharing, capacity building, and strategic planning to integrate Bhashini's language technology framework within state departments. Speaking on the occasion, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena said, "This initiative marks a truly commendable and significant beginning. Leveraging the National Language Translation Mission's framework and the technical expertise of MeitY's Bhashini Division, we envision a future where linguistic barriers are dismantled, empowering citizens and enhancing governmental efficiency."
He added that collaboration with Bhashini could benefit multiple state departments.
"From enabling seamless translation of ancient land records to developing voice-to-text solutions for our police force, the potential is immense. We are committed to maximizing the benefits of this platform through close collaboration with Bhashini and innovative initiatives like a Bihar-specific hackathon. Our aim is to ensure this technological advancement leads to tangible, positive outcomes for every citizen-bridging the linguistic, literacy, and digital divides."...
