PATNA, July 23 -- The resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar from his post has once again brought the limelight on Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar with his name doing the rounds for the post. Surprisingly enough, the demand for the name of Bihar chief minister has not been raised by Nitish's own party, JD(U), but by its alliance partner, the BJP. The JD(U), which had earlier projected Kumar as 'PM material' and even demanded Bharat Ratna for him, termed the proposal as 'non-serious'. Meanwhile, Opposition RJD dubbed the demand as 'disastrous'. On Tuesday, at least three senior BJP leaders batted for Kumar as the face for Vice President. Kumar's name was first floated by BJP MLA Haribhushan Thakur Bachhaul who on Tuesday, while talking to mediapersons, proposed Kumar's name. "Now the VP has resigned. In such a situation, the central government should take the initiative and appoint Bihar CM Nitish Kumar to the post of Vice President. What could be better than Nitish Kumar being made Vice President? Whether Nitish Kumar becomes the Vice President or not, everyone wants it," said Bachoul. Bachol was joined by ministers Prem Kumar and Neeraj Kumar Singh Babloo who echoed similar sentiments. "The party decides this. Whoever becomes the VP will be its call. I will be happy if someone from Bihar becomes the Vice President," Prem Kuma said without taking the name of Nitish Kumar. "It is a good thing. If he (Nitish Kumar) becomes (Vice President), then what is the problem with this? Everyone is doing their work," added the minister. Some JD(U) leaders rejected the idea. "No way. Nitish Kumar is the CM and will remain there," said JD(U) Bihar spokesperson Abhishek Jha, whereas national spokesperson Rajeev Ranjan Prasad called it 'no-serious proposal.' RJD senior leader Bhai Virendra dismissed the idea outright, questioning Kumar's ability to manage national responsibilities when, according to him, the chief minister is struggling to govern his own state. "How can Nitish Kumar be Vice President when he cannot even manage Bihar?" Birendra told reporters. "He is no longer capable. The state is in disarray under his leadership, and this proposal is not grounded in reality." Political experts feel that the demand raised by the BJP is more out of compulsion. "The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has never been able to form a government on its own in Bihar. Whenever the BJP has been in power in Bihar, it has been with the support of Janata Dal United (JD-U) and under the leadership of Nitish Kumar. Some BJP leaders who had earlier been vocal against Nitish see this as an opportunity to get command in their hands," feels Professor Gyanendra Yadav, associate professor of Sociology. In addition to Kumar, names of late Karpoori Thakur's son and union minister Ramnath Thakur and deputy-chairman of Rajya Sabha Harivansh Narayan Singh are also doing the rounds....
