PATNA, May 13 -- Bihar police busted a three-member gang attempting to rob a cash van of Punjab National Bank (PNB). Two of the accused, custodian guards of the Hitachi Cash Management Service Company (HCMSC), a cash management company, were caught siphoning off money meant for ATM replenishment. The cash was reportedly stolen from a cash van at Hathua market in Chhapra Town on Friday afternoon. Following the incident, the police have detained four persons, including security guard of the van, its driver and two of the custodians for interrogation in this case. The Saran Police on Monday claimed to have busted the gang and recovered Rs 70 lakh in stolen cash. The arrested were identified as-Ratnesh Kumar Shah, Sonu Kumar Singh and Krishna Kumar Singh-while police recovered four cell phones, motorcycle, helmet, duplicate key, uniform wear during the crime. Instead of depositing cash into ATMs, they pocketed the money and attempted to cover up the missing amounts by showing stolen after brake open the cash box. Their actions triggered an investigation, eventually leading to their arrests. Saran SP Kumar Ashish said that after withdrawing Rs.70 lakh from the main branch of PNB located in Hathua market premises on Saturday, the bank staff kept this amount in a cash van and locked it. They then went to ICICI Bank for withdrawal of Rs.28 lakh for feeding the bank ATMs. On return, they found that someone had broken open the box and stolen the Rs.70 lakh cash kept in the van. Later, police constituted an SIT to crack the case. The SIT members caught some suspects grills them throughly. During interrogation two of the custodian confessed their crime in which police raided the house of one of their relative and recovered the cash. "According to security protocol, the driver must remain with the van at all times," said the SP, adding that in this case, the driver also went inside the bank, which raises doubts. The CCTV footage from the area revealed a suspicious car parked behind the cash van at the time of the theft.
