PURNIA, June 8 -- A 30-year-old woman is battling for her life in hospital after allegedly attempting suicide by consuming poison, reportedly after feeding it to her two children, who died before they could be taken to the hospital. The incident took place on Friday in Kunwari panchayat under Dhamdaha police station in Bihar's Purnia district. The woman, identified as Neelam Devi, allegedly fed poison to her two children - a three-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter - and later consumed it herself. She is said to have taken this extreme step after her husband, Birendra Sharma, went to Bhagalpur with his first wife. Both the man and the woman are reportedly in second marriages. "Both the children died at the hospital while the woman is still fighting for her life," police said, adding, "We are waiting for her statement, but she remains critically ill and is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Katihar." Police sources said that the room where the woman and her children were found was in a mess, suggesting something different from the initial accounts. "The woman might have created the scene out of desperation and anger before taking the extreme step," police sources said. Station House Officer (SHO) Saroj Kumar stated, "The postmortem of the two children has been conducted, and their bodies have been handed over to their father," adding, "The woman is still fighting for her life in the hospital in Katihar." He also said, "No complaint has so far been lodged by the family."...
