Bengal experts back to tame 'killer' tusker
Jamshedpur, Jan. 12 -- Another rescue team of experts in dealing with elephant attacks reached West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand from West Bengal on Sunday even as the marauding musth male elephant - who had killed 22 persons in the past 10 days - was believed to have crossed over to Odisha, officials said on Sunday.
"The musth tusker has crossed over to jungles in Odisha again, it seems. We found no trace even after reconnaissance operations throughout Saturday and intervening night of Sunday in and around the Kharposh area where people had claimed to have spotted the elephant again on Saturday morning after it came back from Odisha," Aditya Narayan, Chaibasa DFO, told HT.
Musth is a natural periodic condition in male elephants marked by extreme hormonal surges, leading to heightened aggression.
The expert team from Bengal reached Benisagar panchayat in Majhgaon block of West Singhbhum after the previous team returned to Bankura (West Bengal) in the wake of the tusker killing one of their team members on Friday noon.
"Another team from West Bengal has reached here. The experts from Vantara (Gujarat) have left and assured us to come whenever they are approached again," the DFO said....
