ARARIA, May 22 -- Vigilance sleuths on Tuesday late evening arrested Raniganj block development officer (BDO) Ritam Kumar Chauhan and his accountant Aditya Priyadarshi for accepting a bribe of Rs.1,50,000 in Bihar's Araria district, police said on Wednesday. Vigilance deputy superintendent of police (DSP) Chandra Bhushan said, "Following a complaint by deputy pramukh Kalanand Singh that the BDO was demanding a bribe against the development work sanctioned, a trap was laid and the BDO was arrested along with his accountant from his residence with Rs.1,50,000." The arrest was made around 10 pm Tuesday. The DSP said that the raid was still being carried out in his office as well as his residence, adding the arrested persons would be taken to Patna for further legal action. The BDO had joined the block recently and allegedly amassed huge wealth along with the accountant within a very short time and has been known for his opulent lifestyle. On the other hand, an official who did not wish to be named told HT that the complainant, a deputy pramukh and contractor, had long maintained a cozy relationship with all the officers, and he too had amassed huge wealth through questionable means. "A thorough probe must be carried out against both the BDO and the complainant to ensure impartiality," the DSP said....
