Mussoorie, Aug. 24 -- The artificial lake formed due to accumulation of debris in Uttarkashi's Syanachatti has almost drained, with water levels falling by around seven feet from their peak, officials said on Saturday, adding that the lake was now four feet below the Syanachatti bridge deck, allowing pedestrian and vehicular movement to resume. "The water level has significantly reduced by seven feet and there is no immediate danger. We will continue to remove the debris manually and deploy machines as well. Damage assessment is underway, and all affected will be compensated," he said, adding that the chief minister has directed officials to expedite preventive measures to keep similar incidents at bay. According to Panni Lal, executive engineer of Purola irrigation division, pumping and channel-cutting operations throughout the day had reduced the water levels considerably. "However, continuous flow of debris from Kukra Gad is hampering the work. Heavy machines have been deployed to clear the debris so that water does not get blocked again," he said. On August 21, heavy debris flowing into the Yamuna above Syanachatti in Barkot tehsil had choked the channel and created a temporary lake. Rising waters inundated hotels, residences and public buildings, causing extensive damage. After the water receded , district magistrate Prashant Arya and Yamunotri MLA Sanjay Dobhal visited Syanachatti on Saturday to assess the losses and monitor relief measures....
