PATNA, June 19 -- Bihar Governor-cum-Chancellor of universities Arif Mohammad Khan on Wednesday directed the vice chancellors to set up a committee in their respective state universities to identify the problems and have a comprehensive view for resolving them after taking suggestions. Later in the evening, Raj Bhawan issued notifications appointing registrars in the universities. While Samir Kumar Sharma and Dr Ram Kumar were appointed registrar and controller of examination at BRA Bihar University (Muzaffarpur), ProfAshok Kumar Thakur has been appointed registrar at BN Mandal University (Madhepura), relieving Prof Bipin Kumar from post. Prof Ghanshyam Roy has been appointed registrar at Munger University. Aware of the huge shortage of teachers, the Chancellor also asked the universities to send an updated status report on the requirement of teachers in their universities so that required regular/guest teachers could be appointed. The advisor at the education department made a power-point presentation at the meeting with the VCs to dwell on the higher education system and underlined the need to use the Samarth portal of the union ministry of education, which is used by all the central universities and institutions as well as some state institutions in other states. "All the universities will be made available trained IT staff for this," he said. Education minister Sunil Kumar was also present at the meeting. The Chancellor also reviewed the exam calendar of PG and UG and students' attendance, which continues to be erratic in most of them. He also told the VCs to get the hostels vacated from anti-socials elements and illegal occupants. "If the help of administration is sought, that should be immediately taken," he added. The governor had himself visited Patna's BN College after the death of a student in a bomb blast in the campus a couple in May this year to get a first hand feel of the college, which has the longest serving principal. "Mere bookish knowledge is not enough to build character of students. Teachers are their role models. The universities are temples of Saraswati and their sanctity must be maintained at any cost. The post of VC is of dignity and they should strive to take everyone along to improve the academics," he added. The VCs had been asked to come with status reports on specified agenda in the prescribed format at the meeting, held at the start of the new academic session and when most universities are struggling with ad hocism on key positions, rampant campus indiscipline, erratic teaching and late sessions....
