PATNA, Aug. 7 -- Former Bihar legislator Anant Singh on Wednesday walked out of Beur jail and announced he would contest the upcoming assembly polls from Mokama from chief minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal (United), in a development that came a day after the Patna high court granted bail to the mafioso-turned-politician in a shootout case.
A four-term former legislator from Mokama, Singh has represented both JD(U) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) in the assembly. Mokama seat is currently represented by his wife Neelam Devi.
After walking out of Beur central jail in Patna, amid a huge gathering of his supporters, Singh praised CM Nitish Kumar for bringing all-round development in Bihar. "Nitish Kumar will remain the chief minister for next 25 years," the prominent Bhumihar leader told reporters after his release, adding he would contest the assembly polls on a JD(U) ticket.
Known for his strongman image in Bihar politics, Singh was greeted by a number of his supporters as he stepped out of the jail. After walking out from the jail, Singh boarded a new Land Cruiser SUV and arrived at his wife's (Neelam Devi RJD MLA) official flat.

The police had registered four FIRs, including those against Anant Singh and Sonu-Monu. The police filed another FIR against Anant and his supporters for obstruction of their official duty. Later, Singh surrendered on January 24, soon after the case was registered.
