PURNIA, July 2 -- The All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) of Asaduddin Owaisi has hinted that it would contest the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar alone as there is no indication from the Opposition's INDIA bloc, or the Grand Alliance (GA) to adjust the Muslim-centric party. The party had contested the 2020 elections solo and won five seats leaving an impactful mark, especially in the Seemanchal region. Its leaders signal that the AIMIM can even work to float a third front with smaller outfits like Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj. The AIMIM is known for its berserk stance against the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and Owaisi himself leads from the front by addressing rallies in all key Muslim-dominated areas. The party was said to be in talks with GA constituents, notably RJD, to be included in GA so that there would be no split in the Muslim votes. However, talks didn't go through. Speaking to Hindustan Times over phone, AIMIM Bihar president Akhtarul Iman, said, "Despite approaching the GA constituents with a proposal to contest the elections together against the NDA and BJP, we have received no response from them." He added that the party would wait for a week before proceeding to form a third front to offer voters a viable alternative. Iman also expressed disappointment over the GA's indifference to AIMIM's proposal. Popularly known as 'Junior Owaisi' in Seemanchal, Iman claimed that the AIMIM enjoys strong support not only among Muslims but also among Hindus due to the party's continued advocacy for holistic development in the region. "We are in talks with several regional parties to forge an alliance that can present a genuine alternative to both NDA and GA," he said. AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi has already authorised Iman to take all decisions related to the party's electoral strategy in Bihar. According to AIMIM sources, many party leaders favour contesting the elections solo or forming a third front with regional outfits such as Jan Suraaj. "Both AIMIM and Jan Suraaj share the same goal - removing both NDA and GA from Bihar's power corridors and ensuring a holistic development of the state by including all sections sans divisive denominations," a young AIMIM leader told HT. In the 2020 Bihar assembly elections, AIMIM contested 20 seats and won five - all in the Muslim-dominated Seemanchal districts of Kishanganj, Purnia, and Araria. The party was called the surprise factor of the polls. However, four of its MLAs later defected to the RJD in 2022, reducing AIMIM's presence in the assembly to a single MLA - Akhtarul Iman himself. Even in 2020, the AIMIM had approached RJD and Congress to amalgamate in the GA, but its overtures were spurned even then, leading possibly to RJD's poorest performance in Seemanchal as a sizable Muslim vote went into AIMIM's kitty. Dejected, the AIMIM had formed the Grand Democratic Secular Front with Mayawati's BSP and Upendra Kushwaha's RLSP. The combination had moderately worked. Political analysts believe that AIMIM's resurgence will hurt the RJD, which traditionally enjoys strong support among Muslim voters, and as it did in 2020. "AIMIM's gain will be RJD's loss," admitted even an RJD leader on condition of anonymity. Seemanchal, comprising Kishanganj, Araria, Katihar, and Purnia, has a substantial Muslim population ranging from 30% to 70%. Political observers warn that if AIMIM contests the 2025 elections independently, it could once again disrupt the GA's prospects, altering the electoral equation in Bihar where polls are due in October-November....
