PATNA, April 26 -- The All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS)-Patna has introduced to Bihar the hybrid neurovascular surgery - an advanced approach combining endovascular and microsurgical procedures - becoming among the few multi-specialty facilities in India to offer the integrated treatment under one roof, said Dr Vikas Chandra Jha, head of its neurosurgery department and secretary of the Bihar Neurosurgery Society on Saturday. Speaking on the sidelines of a hands-on workshop on advanced endovascular procedures and cerebral bypass surgery, Dr Jha said the hybrid approach allows neurosurgeons to make rapid, case-specific decisions critical for saving lives in conditions such as brain haemorrhage and stroke. "Depending on the patient's condition, a neurosurgeon must quickly decide whether to opt for an endovascular, microsurgical, or hybrid procedure. This decision, often taken within minutes, can significantly influence survival and recovery," he said. Dr Jha noted that the institute has trained its doctors to perform both procedures. While microsurgical interventions such as cerebral bypass are complex and may take up to six hours, endovascular procedures - where a microcatheter is navigated through the femoral artery to treat a ruptured vessel - typically take up to two hours. He explained that neurosurgery and neuro-intervention were traditionally separate specialisations, but advancements in medical science have led to a new cadre of specialists trained in both domains. This enables comprehensive care under one roof, particularly crucial during the "golden hour" following a stroke or haemorrhage, when timely intervention offers the best chances of recovery. The workshop, titled "Neurovascular Update Patna 2026", brought together around 105 neurosurgeons from across the country.
