PATNA, Aug. 7 -- The Resident Doctors' Association (RDA) of the All-India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Patna practically ended their indefinite strike after five days, though in statement at 10.51pm on Tuesday, it said the strike was being kept in abeyance for 10 days, beginning Tuesday. The RDA, which was demanding quashing of the FIR against a medico and a security staff of AIIMS by a legislator, decided to keep in abeyance its strike following a meeting the medicos had with Patna SSP Kartekay Sharma on Tuesday. The SSP, claimed the medicos, assured the doctors of a transparent, impartial and time-bound investigation into the case. The college authorities had already said no coercive action would be taken against the medicos, said the agitating students. "This abeyance is not a withdrawal of our stance but a responsible step taken in good faith and in the larger public interest. We will remain vigilant and united, and we trust the administration will uphold its assurances in both letter and spirit," the RDA said in its late night statement. "We will review the situation after 10 days," the statement said. The RDA said most of its key demands had been acknowledged and acted upon. To mention a few, it said the institute had filed an FIR promptly, addressed the media through a statement, publicly condemning the incident, expressed full institutional support for resident doctors; given written assurance committing to the safety and dignity of resident doctors. The AIIMS administration was able to break the ice following several rounds of meetings its faculty doctors had with the agitating students, before the medicos finally met the SSP.. Earlier on Tuesday, the resident doctors had intensified their strike by shutting the registration and billing counters, crippling hospital services, as less than 100 new patient registrations were reported at the OPD (outpatient department) against more than five times the patients registering on the Abha mobile application to avail of OPD services, said doctors. This was the first time the resident doctors forced the hospital administration to unofficially close the registration and billing counters by threatening the staff managing the counters. The striking doctors had earlier in the day given an ultimatum to completely withdraw from OPD and emergency services from Wednesday, as their demand, seeking quashing of FIR registered by RJD MLA Chetan Anand, remained unfulfilled. Legislator Anand, holding allegiance with the JD(U), and his wife Dr Ayushi Singh, had entered into an altercation with resident doctors at the trauma and emergency wing of AIIMS on July 30 over the treatment protocol of an acquaintance they came to meet. The altercation resulted in Dr Singh lodging an FIR alleging that a resident doctor and security officer of AIIMS misbehaved with her, pushed her, and even snatched her gold chain and wristwatch - accusations that RDA categorically rejected....
