ahead of polls, Police asked to ensure peaceful Muharram
PATNA, July 5 -- With Muharram set to be observed on Sunday, the Bihar Police Headquarters (PHQ) is leaving no stone unturned to ensure peace and harmony across the state, especially in view of the upcoming assembly elections. Top district officials have been made accountable for maintaining law and order.
Taking cognizance of rising incidents of crime and recent communal clashes in some districts, the PHQ has directed all range Inspectors General (IGs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), Senior Superintendents of Police (SSPs), and Superintendents of Police (SPs) to remain on high alert during the Tazia processions, particularly in 12 of the 38 districts identified as sensitive.
Additional Director General (ADG) of Police (Law and Order), Pankaj Darad, instructed district police officials to act on intelligence inputs, identify potential troublemakers, and take preventive measures to maintain communal harmony. Strict instructions have been issued to prohibit the use of DJs and the public display of traditional weapons during the processions.
The ADG informed reporters that 13,719 licensed Tazia processions will take place across the state. He noted that 24 communal incidents were reported during Muharram in 2024, compared to 22 in 2023 and 21 in 2022.
Darad also ordered the deployment of Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and striking forces, with surveillance to be carried out using CCTV cameras, video equipment, and drones where necessary....
