Agitation for control of Mahabodhi shrine ends
GAYA, May 18 -- The three-month-long agitation demanding full control over the Mahabodhi Temple in Bodh Gaya came to an end on Friday evening, following firm administrative action, strong opposition from locals, and a notice from the landowner to vacate the protest site, officials said on Saturday.
Since February 12, a group of monks and Buddhist practitioners-primarily from various districts in eastern Uttar Pradesh-had been staging a protest under the banner of Mahabodhi Mandir Mukti Andolan. Their primary demand was an amendment to the Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC) Act, 1949, specifically the removal of the clause mandating Hindu members in the committee that oversees the temple's affairs.
Tensions escalated on Tuesday evening when the protesters, led by Bhante Vinacharya of Muzaffarnagar (U.P.), entered the temple premises, raised slogans, disrupted proceedings, and allegedly assaulted shopkeepers and locals who tried to intervene. A case was registered against Bhante Vinacharya and others., Bhante Pragya Pio, Hema, Vikas Kharat, and Aryapal of the Sleeping Buddha Temple, along with 15-20 unidentified individuals, on charges including assault and rioting. Vinacharya was arrested, while other accused are absconding.
The landowner of the private property near Domuhani, where the group had been staging the dharna, served a notice asking the protestors to vacate the premises. This move compelled them to end the agitation on Friday, confirmed protest leader....
