PATNA, Feb. 11 -- Environment, forest and climate change minister Pramod Kumar on Tuesday told the state Assembly that the government was taking adequate steps to ensure periodic culling of nilgais (blue bulls) that damage standing crops in several districts. Replying to a starred question raised by BJP MLA Rajnish Kumar, the minister said the culling was carried out by district administrations in coordination with panchayat bodies. He added that an adequate number of shooters had been engaged to control the wild animals that destroy crops. The BJP member had sought to know whether there was any provision to provide subsidies or compensation to farmers for crop losses caused by nilgais in different districts. Responding to a supplementary question, the minister said shooters hired by panchayats were paid remuneration as per prescribed norms, even though the BJP MLA claimed there were instances where shooters had not been paid for a long time....
