PATNA, July 30 -- A wanted criminal involved in the murderous attack on a prominent doctor and retired health official Dr Tapeshwar Prasad Singh was injured in an encounter with police at Hasanpur village under the jurisdiction of Sherghati police station on the Bihar-Jharkhand border. Two of his associates were also arrested, police said. Dr Tapeshwar was shot on July 19 while returning home after a morning walk. Gaya Ji Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Anand Kumar said that the injured criminal has been identified as Satish Manjhi alias Chandan, the son of ward councillor Shankar Manjhi of Dhab Chiraiya panchayat. A motorcycle used in the crime, a country-made pistol, two live cartridges, and an empty cartridge were recovered from the spot. His associates-Vicky Kumar Pawan and Ashish Kumar Mahto-were arrested and are being interrogated, the SSP added. After being shot, the injured criminal was rushed to Magadh Medical College for treatment. His condition is said to be critical. Police officers spent 45 minutes searching for blood at the encounter site. "Several vital clues have been recovered from the spot and are being probed. The doctor sustained a bullet injury to his jaw. Police had received a tip-off about Satish's hideout on Sunday night. Based on this input, a team reached Manraj Khurd.
