ACB nabs garrison engineer from IAF station in Darbhanga
DARBHANGA, May 4 -- In a major crackdown on corruption, the team of Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB), Patna, on Saturday trapped an assistant garrison engineer of the Military Engineer Services (MES) posted at the Indian Air Force (IFS) Station in Darbhanga while accepting a bribe of Rs.50,000, a senior CBI official said.
The accused, identified as Kaushlesh Kumar, was caught red-handed while receiving the bribe from a local contractor in exchange for conducting the measurement of a completed road construction project and processing the related bill within the Air Force Station premises.
According to the official, the ACB acted on a complaint lodged by a contractor, who alleged repeated demands for illegal gratification by the engineer for clearing his legitimate dues. Following a preliminary verification, the ACB laid a trap and launched a meticulously planned operation.
In order to avoid suspicion and gain access to the high-security zone, ACB officials entered the premises in disguise and apprehended the accused in the act of accepting the bribe.
The operation, however, was not without challenges. The ACB team reportedly faced considerable harassment at the hands of security personnel stationed at the IAF gate. Despite showing their credentials and repeated requests for entry, they were denied access for hours under the pretext of security checks. Battling the scorching heat, the team had to seek intervention from a senior MES officer stationed at the Darbhanga base. Even after his involvement, entry was delayed.
Describing the incident as "very unfortunate," an ACB officer, requesting anonymity, expressed serious concern over the behavior meted out to them during an official duty. "We were made to wait unnecessarily and treated with suspicion despite being on a lawful mission," the officer said.
The arrested official will be produced before a designated court under the provisions of the Prevention of Corruption Act. Further investigation is underway.
The propreiter of one Shiv Shakti Construction, involved in similar work, had also levelled accusations of graft charge against the accused engineer, alleged the official further....
