Haridwar, Sept. 28 -- The 132.30-metre-long bridge over the Ganga, Bajrang Setu, connecting the districts of Pauri Garhwal and Tehri Garhwal in Rishikesh, is nearing completion, officials familiar with the project here said. Once completed, Bajrang Setu will offer a sky-walk experience, being northern India's first bridge to have a 65mm glass-width, 1.5-metre-wide footpath on both sides for pedestrians, while light vehicles will be allowed on the middle track. The bridge, being constructed at a cost of over Rs.68 crore, will replace the British-era iconic suspension Lakshman Jhula bridge, a major tourist attraction in and around Rishikesh city for over a century. During a recent inspection of the construction work at Bajrang Setu, Public Works Department (PWD) minister Satpal Maharaj and Pauri Garhwal district magistrate Swati S Bhadauria directed the nodal PWD officials and engineers to speed up the remaining 10% of work immediately so that the bridge can be safely opened for public and vehicular movement by the end of this year....
