9 Bihar workers missing in U'khand flash floods
BETTIAH, Aug. 12 -- At least three migrant workers from Bihar were traced but nine others, most of them from West Champaran district, are still missing after a massive cloudburst triggered a flash flood through swollen Kheer Ganga river on August 5, causing large-scale destruction in Uttarakhand's Dharali village.
West Champaran's district magistrate (DM) Dharmendra Kumar confirmed on Monday: "Out of the 11 villagers from Sikta block who went missing after the cloudburst in Uttarakhand, three have been traced and they are on their way back to native villages. We are in touch with the authorities concerned."
After staying clueless for days about their whereabouts after the cloudburst, family members of Munna Kumar, Rahul Kumar and Yogendra Mukhiya -- who hail from Maglahiya village in Sargatiya panchayat in Sikta block -- heaved a sigh of relief. Ramji Mukhiya received a call from his son and learned about two other co-villagers. "You can understand what we all were going through during those hours. I pray for the safe return of other villagers," Ramji Mukhiya said.
When contacted, Mukhiya's son Munna Kumar, said, "We survived miraculously as three of us had gone to Gangotri for some plumbing work."
However, with each passing hour, hopes of any other migrant workers from the village have become murkier for their family members.
At Maglahiya village, migrant worker Brajesh Yadav's wife Sanjana Devi seems to have resigned to her fate now. "God knows what He has ordained for us," said downcast Devi.
However, mother of Rakesh Kumar, who left for Uttarakhand and worked as labourer at a construction site of Dharali village in Uttarkashi district, is inconsolable as he remains missing. His brother Mukesh Thakur said, "My brother had called us at 12.22pm on August 5. He is traceless since then."
Among the missing migrant workers include Sandeep Kumar, Brijesh Yadav, Sandeep Kumar, Rakesh Kumar, Guddu Kumar Das, Devraj Sharma Anil Kumar and Sushil Kumar -- residents of Maglahiya village of Sargatiya panchayat. Most of these workers were away in Uttarakhand for over three months, said Lalu Babu, brother of migrant worker Brajesh Yadav, adding, "While three of them work their as carpenters, others work as construction labourers or plumbers at Dharali.
A list shared by Shardul Gusain, disaster management officer (DMO) at Uttarkashi, shows Nathi Sharma among the list of missing people from Bihar.
Speaking to HT, Vimal Singh Rana, who hails from Ganeshpur in Uttarkashi, said, "Sharma, who belongs to Saharsa district, along with my brother Suresh Singh, is missing since August 5. They had left for Dharali with their ponies."
When contacted Prashant Kumar Arya, district magistrate (DM) Uttarkashi said, "The rescue and relief work is underway."...
