6 women drown as boat capsizes in sone river
AURANGABAD, Oct. 11 -- Six farmers, all of them women, were feared drowned after a country boat capsized in Sone river near Raghunathpur sand ghat (sand digging and lifting point) under Badem police station of Aurangabad district on Friday morning, police said.
The old boat was carrying 18 farmers, 16 of them women, who were going to the Sone Dila (highlands in the river) to weed their potato crops they had planted there, SDPO Aurangabad Sanjay Pandey said.
At about 9am, while the boat entered a 100-feet-wide stretch of deep waters and strong currents, it got caught in a whirlpool and began to sway. Despite the boatmen's best efforts, the boat sank. Some of the passengers who knew swimming were among the 12 people rescued by fishermen and people on neighbouring boats but six women drowned with the boat, SDPO Pandey said.
Police were informed and fishermen and local divers started a rescue operation. A girl named Tamanna (20) of Badem village was fished out but she was dead. Police led by Badem SHO and local administrative officials reached the place and helped the villagers in rescue.
The NDRF and SDRF from Patna and Gaya Ji respectively, rushed to the place to search for the missing women, SDPO said....
