DARBHANGA, Aug. 21 -- A local court on Wednesday sentenced five men to life imprisonment for the murder of Ziaur Rahman alias Babban, a resident of Shobhan village under Simri police station. Rahman was district unit president of Congress (minority cell) in Darbhanga. The convicts - Md Javed, Md Firoz, Md Sahabuddin alias Dablu, Md Chhote and Md Waris Karim - were awarded life imprisonment under IPC sections 302 and 120(B), besides additional jail terms under various provisions of the Arms Act. Each convict was also fined Rs.1.15 lakh, with a default clause of further imprisonment. Earlier, additional district and sessions judge Suman Kumar Diwakar had held all five accused guilty of crime on July 25 this year. According to Assistant Public Prosecutor (APP) Renu Jha, the case dates back to December 7, 2022, when Rahman was murdered. His body was recovered the next day from an orchard, a little distance away from Shobhan Ekmi bypass near Idgah. On the complaint of his wife, Jeba Rukhsana, an FIR (Simri PS case no 249/22) was registered on December 9, 2022. Police later arrested three accused and filed a chargesheet, while two others were chargesheeted after supplementary investigation. Both cases were merged for trial.
