Jaipur, Aug. 7 -- A 45-year-old man has shot at least 25 stray dogs dead in the last three days in a village in Jhunjhunu district following which the police launched a search operation to arrest him, officials said on Wednesday. The additional police superintendent of Nawalgarh, Rajveer Singh Champawat, said, "The incidents took place in Kumawat village since August 3. After a video of it surfaced on social media, we lodged a case on Wednesday and launched a mission to arrest him." According to the officials, the man, identified as Sheyochand Babaria, was hired by the local villagers for the job. "Prima facie, two to three dogs in the village have been eating the farmers' goats for the last few days. They ate around 30 goats after which the villagers, in retaliation, hired Babaria to kill all the stray dogs in the village," said Champawat. He further added that Babaria is also a native of the same village and a local farmer. "It is yet not clear how he managed to get a rifle to kill these dogs," he said. A purported video that surfaced on social media revealed the man, wearing a white shirt carrying a bag roaming around the village with a rifle in his hand and targeting the stray dogs. On Wednesday, the former sarpanch of the village, Saroj Jhajharia, lodged a case against Babaria under Section 325 (mischief by killing or maiming animal) of Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and relevant sections of the Arms Act. Champawat said, "Primary probe suggests only two to three dogs were involved in the killing of the goats, not all the 25 that were killed. The man is absconding. Further probe is underway."...
