4 of family die, 1 critical; police suspect suicide
PATNA, July 20 -- At least four members of a family died and another remains in critical condition after allegedly consuming poison in a suspected suicide attempt at a rented house near Jal Mandir under the jurisdiction of Pawapuri police station in Nalanda district, police said on Saturday. The incident reportedly took place late on Friday night.
According to police, the youngest son of the family survived as he did not consume the poison. He is being questioned to determine how he escaped when the rest of the family members decided to end their lives.
Following the incident, all family members were rushed to the Bhagwan Mahavir Institute of Medical Sciences (VIMS), where the victim's 38-year-old wife and their three children - aged 16, 15 and 14 - died during treatment. The woman's husband is undergoing treatment and his condition is stated to be critical, the officer said.
Police said the husband, who runs a ready-made garments shop, was under financial stress after incurring losses and accumulating a debt of Rs.5 lakh. The family came from Purnakama village in Sheikhpura district.
Upon receiving information, Rajgir Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sunil Kumar, Inspector Manish Bhardwaj, and Pawapuri outpost in-charge reached the spot to take stock of the situation. "We have launched an investigation into the case and are trying to ascertain what prompted them to take such a drastic step," said DSP Sunil Kumar, adding that preliminary findings suggest the victim was under pressure from moneylenders.
Meanwhile, a first information report (FIR) has been registered at the concerned police station. Dr Divyansh of Pawapuri Hospital said, "Five members of a family who had consumed poison were brought in. Four of them died, and the condition of one remains critical. We are doing our best to provide better treatment."...
