4 of a family found dead in Dumka, probe on
Dhanbad, Nov. 24 -- Shock and grief gripped Bardehhi village under Hansdiha police station in Dumka district on Sunday after four members of a family were found dead under mysterious circumstances. Police said, preliminary investigation indicated a suspected case of murder, though they were probing various angles behind the incident.
Early on Sunday morning villagers spotted the body of a man lying in a field near the village. He was identified as 32-year-old Birendra Manjhi. Alarmed villagers immediately informed the police.
When a team from Hansdiha police station reached his residence, they recovered the bodies of his wife Aarti Kumari (28) and their two young children - daughter Rohi, around four to five years old, and son Viraj, around two to three years old - from inside the house. Rope marks were found on the necks of all three.
According to police, Birendra had brought his wife and children back from Aarti's maternal home in Palajori (Deoghar district) only on Saturday. Viraj was reportedly suffering from a heart ailment, and preparations were underway to take him to Vellore for treatment.
Family members informed police that the couple had quarrelled late on Saturday night over an unspecified issue. Police suspect the argument turned serious, leading Birendra to allegedly kill his wife and children before ending his own life in a nearby field. However, villagers and relatives have raised questions over how his body was found outside while the others were inside, prompting police to widen the investigation.
Dumka SP Pitambar Singh Kherwar said, "The exact reasons behind the deaths will be known only after a detailed investigation. At this stage, all possible angles, including murder and suicide, are being thoroughly examined," he said.
A forensic team and dog squad visited the spot and collected samples as part of the probe. Statements of family members, neighbours and villagers are being recorded to reconstruct the sequence of events....
