4 constables suspended for thrashing devotee
Ranchi, March 10 -- Four policemen were suspended on Monday after a video showing them allegedly assaulting a devotee at the Rajrappa Temple in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district went viral.
A police official close to the matter said the altercation occurred on Sunday at the exit gate of the Maa Chinnamastika Temple.
"The incident began when a devotee attempted to bypass the queue by entering through the exit gate. The prompt action was taken after the video, which showed the officers allegedly beating up the devotee in front of his family, sparked widespread public outrage," the police official said.
A press statement issued from the office of state police director general Tadasha Mishra confirmed the action.
"... Taking cognisance of the viral video on social media of police personnel assaulting devotees at the Rajrappa Temple in Ramgarh district, Tadasha Mishra directed the Superintendent of Police, Ramgarh to take necessary action as soon as possible. In light of the above directive, the Superintendent of Police, Ramgarh, has suspended the police personnel involved in the incident with immediate effect and placed them on the line, and further action is being taken in connection with the incident," the statement issued in the evening reads.
Ramgarh SP Ajay Kumar could not be available for his comment on the matter. A police constable close to him shared the name of those constables who were suspended.
"Following an investigation by DSP Chandan Kumar Vats, Ramgarh SP Ajay Kumar suspended four constables -- Shyamlal Mahto, Radhe Shyam Kumar, Bahadur Oraon and Johnson Surin. A home guard jawan, Sikandar Yadav, has been dismissed," the police constable said.
A police official said the devotee who was assaulted had come from Jamshedpur. "He was assaulted in the presence of his wife, child and elderly parents," the official said....
