PATNA, Sept. 11 -- The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) arrested 30 escaped undertrials from Nepal while they were attempting to cross over to Indian territory through the porous border in Bihar's Sitamarhi, Madhuvani, Araria, East Champaran and West Champaran districts, officials said. All escapees were arrested in a coordinated drive from Tuesday night till late on Wednesday. SSB officials said that while the identities of 10 prisoners were confirmed, they were investigating others. In a jailbreak in Mahottari district of Nepal on Monday evening, around 550 prisoners, including Maoist leader Kaushal Yadav, escaped from Jaleswar prison. Escapees scattered in various directions and some of them were learnt to have headed towards India via Bihar. Bihar had put all its bordering districts on high alert following the unrest in Nepal. Till writing of this report, the SSB officials gave details of 10 arrested late on Tuesday night. According to officials, among arrested eight are Nepali nationals while two are Indian citizens who hail from Bihar. Preliminary investigations suggested that all of them were undertrial prisoners. The SSB handed them over to Bhitha More and Sursand police stations in Sitamarhi. Arrested prisoners were identified as Guddu Kumar Yadav (Motihari, Bihar), Reyaz Dafali and Rajesh Tamang ( Budha Pokhar, Nepal), Mohan Kumar Singh (Vaishali, Bihar) Mahanaresh Mahto, Binod Rai, Mujahid Ansari, Indesh Mandal, Surendra Shah and Krishna Kumar Mahto (Nepal). Manoj Kumar, SHO of Bhittha police station, said seven inmates, including Mohan Kumar from Hajipur, had been put behind bars. Sursand SHO Dhananjay Kumar Pandey said that three prisoners, including one Guddu Kumar, were kept in detention till further orders. "The agitators attacked the jail on Monday evening. The police retreated, seeing them in strength, and this led to 550 inmates escaping. Many political and Maoists leaders were also lodged there and are said to have escaped," said one of the arrested undertrial prisoners. SSB officials said that 10 arrested prisoners were nabbed from separate places and they were suspected to be from Nepal when they could not show any valid identity proofs to the troops deployed on the border. "After initial inquiry, it was found that they were those prisoners who had escaped from the Nepal jail on Monday," said an official, requesting anonymity. Meanwhile, an official of Nepal's APF police said the authorities had launched a hunt for the prisoners . Since there is a coordination between Bihar home department and Nepal security forces, it is likely that prisoners might be handed over to Nepal police once order is established there.
