BETTIAH, Sept. 7 -- A 27-year-old married woman climbed a mobile tower at Harsidih in East Champaran on Saturday and threatened to jump to death if forced to return to her in-laws' house, police said. "It was a scary situation. She had climbed nearly two-thirds of the tower after her family members pressured her to go back to her in-laws. She had come to her mother's place for delivery and recently gave birth to a baby," said Seema Kumari, additional SHO, Harsidih. According to police, the woman (name withheld) was furious after her in-laws insisted she return with them. She slipped out of her house unnoticed and scaled the 150-foot-high tower at Harsidih Chowk, drawing the attention of passersby. Soon, a huge crowd of villagers gathered as word spread. A police team, along with officials from the civil administration including Circle Officer (CO) Arvind Kumar Choudhary, rushed to the spot with an ambulance, safety nets and fire brigade personnel from Areraj. Her parents were also called in. "There was a complete communication gap due to the height, and when efforts to pacify her through signs and gestures failed, we launched a rescue operation by placing mattresses on the ground. Meanwhile, an NDRF team was also called in, though we dared not attempt to climb the tower," said CO Choudhary. Police eventually asked her parents to agree to her demands to avert a tragedy. After prolonged persuasion, the woman finally relented and climbed down around 11 am - nearly four hours after the drama began. She was married last year to a man from a village in West Champaran district....
