21-yr-old languishing in Dubai jail, kin in Bihar struggle for his release
BETTIAH, Feb. 16 -- The Malakar family of Bettiah in West Champaran is facing an agonising wait as their son Ravi Kumar has been incarcerated in a jail in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for over a year now. With each passing day, hopes of reunion is growing dimmer, and uncertainty continues to cloud his future.
Talking to Hindustan Times, Ravi's father 47-year-old Kanhaiya Kumar, himself battling health complications and financial distress, said the reason for his 21-year-old son's prolonged incarceration was still not fully clear to them.
"I had to borrow Rs.60,000 to send my son to Dubai for his employment as electrician. He was promised to be paid Rs.40,000 as monthly remuneration. But they were paid abysmally low during the first three months," said Kanahiya , a resident of Sant Ghat area on the outskirts of Bettiah.
Ravi who left for UAE on May 22, 2024 hardly had the inkling about the fate he had in store as he landed in a jail on December 12, 2024. His pursuit of greener pastures in a distant land opened a can of worms. "Ravi came in contact with some local people who promised to engage him in another company. Therein lies the whole problem and one day, he found himself behind the bars," said Malakar, a driver by profession claiming the circumstances were not yet clear.
Since then, he has remained behind bars as legal proceedings continue.
The family alleges that repeated efforts to secure his release had yielded little progress. "We are running from pillar to post, but nothing tangible has come out. We have approached Union minister Satish Chandra Dubey and Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor," a family member said,
Neighbours and relatives in Bettiah say uncertainty has taken a visible toll on the ailing father, whose health has deteriorated amid stress and anxiety. The family has urged the authorities concerned to intervene and expedite the legal process to facilitate his early release.
