Jaipur, May 4 -- The Rajasthan Police has identified at least 200 Bangladeshi nationals who have been staying in the state illegally over the years, as the department launched a special campaign against the illegal foreign nationals on Wednesday, officials familiar to the matter said on Saturday. The drive was launched after a directive from state chief minister Bhajan Lal Sharma in a high-level meeting with the bureaucrats, including home secretary Kumar and DGP Utkal Ranjan Sahoo on Wednesday morning. During the meeting, he directed the police department to intensify surveillance and deport undocumented Bangladeshi nationals. Director General (DG) of Rajasthan police's intelligence unit Sanjay Agrawal said, "The drive was launched on Wednesday, and since then we have identified 200 illegal Bangladeshi nationals after checking their documents. We are taking preparations to deport them. Meanwhile, thousands of suspects, 86 from Jaipur, were also detained for questioning and document verification." According to police, the intelligence unit is monitoring the process from the police headquarters in Jaipur while the district police superintendents and the Jaipur commissioner were assigned to form their teams. "First the teams are identifying some areas where considerable number of Bangladeshi nationals are residing illegally. We are collecting documents related to their citizenship, including the Aadhaar cards. Those being held are being kept at the detention centres," said Agrawal. Meanwhile, in view of the rising number of detainees, the home department has also set up three new detention centres to accommodate them. "The drive started only with one such centre in Alwar. Now, as the number of detainees has soared, we have set up three new centres for the foreign nationals by converting the existing sub-jails in Udaipur's Jhadolm, Nagaur's Merta, and Kotputli's Behror," said Anand Kumar, who is the additional chief secretary of the home department. Kumar added, "The illegal foreign nationals will be detained here until deportation after two-level of nationality verification." According to the police officers, the largest chunk of the suspected illegal Bangladeshi nationals were detained from Ajmer. "Though the state-level data is yet to be compiled, 400 illegal Bangladeshi nationals were detained from Ajmer alone. The documents of nearly 2,000 people were checked since Wednesday," another official from the intelligence unit said on condition of anonymity....
