2 smugglers held with endangered species in West Champaran
BETTIAH, Sept. 7 -- A joint team of the Forest Department and the 44th battalion of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) arrested two smugglers and rescued an endangered pangolin from their possession in West Champaran, officials said on Saturday.
Dr Nesamani K, Conservator of Forests and Field Director of Valmiki Tiger Reserve (VTR), said the pangolin, listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species, was seized near the SSB camp at Sirisiya village under Matiyariya police station area on Friday.
"Two people have been arrested with the pangolin and sent to judicial custody. Based on the investigation, we have identified some others involved. Further inquiry is underway into it," Nesamani said. He added that the rescued animal belongs to the VTR. "The arrested people were planning to smuggle the animal across the border through a courier," he said.
The arrested accused have been identified as Bhuteli Mahato, 67, of Bankatwa under Gobarhiya police station, and Krishna Oraon, 22, of Chaliya Don in the same area....
