2 killed within 15 hrs in Bihar distts, Oppn hits out at Nitish govt
PATNA, July 13 -- A grocery shop owner and a nurse of Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) were gunned down within 15 hours of each other in Patna and Nalanda districts of Bihar, respectively, police said on Saturday.
The incidents that come a week after the murder of prominent businessman Gopal Khemka and a day after a noted sand trader Ramakant Yadav was gunned down in Patna have triggered sharp reactions from the Opposition, who blamed the Nitish Kumar-led NDA government for deteriorating law and order situation in Bihar.
According to police, grocery shop owner named Vikram Jha (35), a resident of Madhubani, was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Patna's Ramkrishna Nagar on Friday evening. Police said that two motorcycle-borne armed men entered the Trishna Mart, a local retail store, located at Jakariyapur locality under the jurisdiction of Ramkrishna Nagar police station and fired at Jha from point blank range. He succumbed to his injuries and his attackers managed to flee from the spot.
City SP (East) Parichay Kumar confirmed the incident and said that preliminary investigation suggested that the criminals entered his shop with sole motive to kill Jha. They did not touch any items and money from the Mart, he said. The victim lived in a rented house at the locality where he ran Trishna Mini Mart on the ground floor and lived with his wife and children on the first floor.
On Saturday, Jakariyapur residents staged a protest march with the Jha's body. They raised slogans against the state government and the police over the deteriorating law and order. They said several cases of crime were being reported in the Ramkrishna Nagar PS area and the police were not nailing the criminals.
At Nalanda, nurse Sushila Kumari, working in PMCH, was gunned down at Doiyan village under Noorsarai police station. The reason behind the incident is said to be a land dispute. The incident took place at around 11am on Saturday when she was returning home from her agricultural field. She was set to retire from the job in four months time.
This is said to be the eighth murder in Sushila's family in a decade over property related dispute. Sushila's son Sonu Kumar alleged that his cousin Nilesh had earlier threatened her with dire consequences. Sadar SDPO-2 Sanjay Kumar confirmed the incident and said that the reason behind the incident is said to be a family related dispute. Her murder follows two other brazen shooting incidents reported just within a day on Friday.
These incident have sparked fresh outrage, with Leader of Opposition in Bihar assembly Tejashwi Yadav launching a scathing attack on CM Nitish Kumar and the NDA government. Tejashwi, in a social media post, said: "Businessman Vikram Jha murdered in Patna! DK Tax, the transfer industry, and the chaotic situation of the state are the reasons for this. Why is the unconscious chief minister silent? Who is responsible for the hundreds of murder incidents happening in the state? Corrupt Bhuja Party should answer."
Chirag Paswan, Union minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) chief, on Saturday again hit out at his own coalition government over the law and order situation in the state. "How many more murders will Biharis have to endure? It is beyond comprehension what the responsibility of the Bihar Police is," he tweeted in Hindi.
In defence of his government and launching a counter attack, deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Sinha accused the RJD of having links with criminal networks, including sand, land, and liquor mafia. "As the Assembly election is approaching, they are orchestrating criminal incidents to create an atmosphere of anarchy," Sinha said.
He asserted that CM Nitish Kumar is fully committed to controlling law and order in Bihar, and the government is taking all necessary steps to curb criminal activities....
