19-year-old Raj para athlete attacked in Pauri Garhwal, 2 held
Dehradun, June 2 -- A 19-year-old para athlete from Rajasthan, who came to Uttarakhand to practise at the Ransi Stadium, was allegedly assaulted with sticks and liquor bottles in the Pauri Garhwal district by over a dozen men, police officers aware of the matter said on sunday, adding that two people have been arrested in this connection.
Police are yet to ascertain the reason why the accused attacked the victim, they said.
The athlete, identified Vikas Yadav from Sikar in Rajasthan, suffered a fracture in his skull. The incident allegedly took place on May 30, and a case was registered against the accused the next day, police said.
The FIR was registered against two people, Ritwik Aswal (26), a former students' union president of Bejawada Gopal Reddy (BGR) campus of Garhwal University, Ashish Thapliyal (23), and 15 unknown people under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 117 (2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 191 (2) (rioting) and 324 (4) (Mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs.20,000 and more but less than Rs.1 lakh) of the BNS at Pauri Garhwal police station, police said. Both Aswal and Thapliyal have been arrested, said police.
Yadav in his complaint said, "At around 7pm on May 30, when I reached near the new bus stand after practising at Ransi stadium, accused Aswal, Thapliyal and 10-15 other men started beating me with a bat and glass bottles. They assaulted me with sticks with an intention of killing me... my skull and hand got fractured. When I started shouting for help, my friends came... but they also attacked them. They assaulted them with bats, stones, helmets and glass bottles... When my coach Surendra came... they beat him up too."...
