12 arrested for pelting stones at cops during protest in Pokhran
Barmer/Jaisalmer, June 24 -- A total of 12 people have been arrested for pelting stones at the Pokhran police station during a protest against the arrest of a local resident, who had posted indecent remarks against local MLA Mahant Pratappuri, police said on Monday.
"The incident started after a local resident, identified as Rafique from Gomat village, posted some indecent remarks on one of the Yoga Day related photos of MLA Pratappuri on June 21. Rafique was arrested at around 9pm on Sunday," said Sudhir Choudhary, Jaisalmer superintendent of police (SP).
"Following his arrest, at around 10.30 pm, around 60 people led by Gomat village Sarpanch's husband Firoz Khan gathered at the Pokaran police station to protest against Rafique's arrest. Despite efforts by police to pacify the crowd, the protest turned violent as they began pelting stones at the police station. No injuries were reported among police personnel, though the situation quickly spiraled out of control and police had to resort to lathi-charge," he said.
The SP said that 19 people from among the protesters were detained. "So far, 13 people have been arrested on charges of obstructing government work and inciting violence. Firoz Khan was one of the 13 arrested," he said.
Of 13 people, seven people booked under BNS section 151 and 117, and six people, including Rafique, booked under section 121 (1), 132, 119, 263 (1), 109(1), 191 (2) and 333, the SP further said.
Police said that Khan, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, had misled villagers and incited the crowd by spreading misinformation regarding the arrest.
Choudhary said 40 more people, allegedly involved in the violence, have been identified. Their names have been included in the FIR....
