'Engineers to be made accountable for any breach of embankments'
PATNA, May 28 -- The water resources department (WRD) has directed all engineers to carry all repair and strengthening works of embankments ahead of the monsoon season kicking off from July onwards , during a review meeting held on Tuesday chaired by WRD minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and senior officers of the department.
The WRD minister stressed that senior officers of the department should visit the embankments and also prepare a report of all bridges near the embankments , which are in rickety condition. "The embankments should be approachable. The engineers and contractors failing to comply with standard operating procedures for strengthening and upkeep of embankments would be facing strict action," the WRD minister said.
Principal secretary, WRD Santosh Kumar Mal said the department this time is going to be strict on fixing accountability against those engineers who are found lacking in their work and also take action, if there is any breach of embankments during rains.
"We have issued instructions to all engineers to enusre that embankments in the districts affected by floods should be strengthened and all necessary repair works should be done at the earliest. If there are any breaches except in situations which are extreme, the engineers from junior level to chief engineer would be held accountable," Mal said.
Mal also said the training to engineers and other officials were being given and all procedures for flood control would be adhered for tackling floods in the coming months.
Last year, the state had witnessed deluge in large parts of north Bihar and damage to embankments of Kosi and other rivers owing to heavy discharge of water from Nepal rivers , as per reports.
There was also heavy damage to standing crops especially paddy in large parts of north Bihar districts last year.
At the meeting today, the department officials also felicitated retired chief engineer ( flood control and drainage), Gopalganj Sanjay Kumar for the latter's exemplary work in strengthening the embankments in Gopalganj during his service period.
The meeting also reviewed the schemes running in Gopalganj, Muzaffarpur, Samastipur, Birpur, Katihar and Patna . Irrigation projects being run for ensuring proper water facility to farmers in various districts also had been reviewed at a high level meeting held on Monday....
