'Data in favour': ADG avers 'Holi to monsoon' crime spike remark
PATNA, July 19 -- There is a clear seasonal pattern to crime in Bihar, with the crime graph typically rising after Holi and continuing until the onset of the monsoon, before dipping during the lean agricultural season, said ADG (Headquarters) Kundan Krishnan. Even though his comments created a flutter in the state already in shock after a spate of recent killings, he has stuck to his ground, saying that the data supports his claim.
Presenting the monthly crime review of murder cases in Bihar for the 2005-2025 period before the media, Krishnan noted a consistent trend of increased cases between May and July.
"This year is no different. There is data since 2005 to support what I said. What I meant - and what was misconstrued through self-styled interpretations, which I don't wish to comment on - is that once the monsoon begins, people get involved in agricultural activities. That's the crucial sowing period," he said, adding that the rise in murders generally starts from the Holi festival and continues until the onset of the monsoon.
Krishnan stressed that land disputes remain the single most important reason behind murder cases.
"Even the political leadership is aware of this and is taking the ongoing land survey seriously to reduce the chances of such conflicts, which often lead to violence and disturb peace in rural communities," he said....
