Ghaziabad, Jan. 3 -- The Ghaziabad traffic police has planned to rope in 500 citizens as 'traffic mitra' (traffic volunteers) in the next fortnight to help manage traffic, officials said Friday. Officials said that the traffic police have a strength of about 900 personnel of all ranks. "The volunteers will help ensure smooth movement of vehicles. They will be issued identification cards after their verification procedures. They will not be entrusted to issue any challans or penalties and will act only in the presence of traffic police officials. We have also planned to train them," said Trigun Bisen, deputy commissioner of police (traffic police). Officials added that out of 280 such volunteers already identified, identification cards have been issued to 18. "We have deployed 18 volunteers so far. The process for roping in 262 others is in progress. We expect that all 500 volunteers may get deployed in 10-15 days. They will be called in to manage traffic, especially during the peak hours and occasions," DCP Bisen added.
