Storm kills 9 in GB Nagar, Gzb, Delhi
Noida/Ghaziabad/New Delhi, May 23 -- Wednesday's sudden thunderstorm and heavy downpour wreaked havoc across Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), leaving at least nine people dead - the most number of deaths in rain-related incidents so far this year.
In Delhi, three people died on Wednesday night. A nine-year-old girl died in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur when a metal window pane fell on her. The deceased, Sahana alias Chandni, a resident of Nehru Vihar, was admitted to Civil Lines Trauma Centre where she died during treatment. According to her grandfather, she was standing in a street when the window pane on a third floor house broke due to strong winds and fell on her, officers said.
Two other deaths had been reported from near Lodhi Road and northeast Delhi's Gokulpuri. Mohd Azhar had died after a tree fell on him, while a 49-year-old homeless wheelchair bound man, identified as Shivnandan, was killed after an electricity pole fell on his wheelchair. At least nine people also sustained injuries across Delhi in tree felling and wall collapse incidents, Delhi Fire Services said.
The most number of deaths were reported from Noida, Greater Noida, and Ghaziabad, where at least six people, including a two-year-old girl, were killed, while eight others were injured, officials said.
A tin shed collapse killed a 50-year-old woman from Jharkhand and her two-year-old grandson at Migsun Ultimo Society in Omicron 3, Greater Noida, police said. The woman was identified as Sunita Kumari.
"On Wednesday night, she went out to play with her grandson in the society's park. As the thunderstorm hit and she was returning to her flat with the child in her arms, a tin shed installed between two high-rise buildings on the 22nd floor collapsed on them," said a police officer. Kumari died on the spot, while the toddler, Advik Shaurya, was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
In Jarcha, a tree fell on a 45-year-old man while he was walking inside NTPC premises. "Around 10pm, when NTPC workers began clearing uprooted trees, Ram Kishan's blood-soaked body was found under one," said a police officer.
A 40-year-old motocycle rider was killed similarly in Ghaziabad after the branch of a tree fell on him. Identified by his first name Muzzammil, police said the victim was wearing a helmet but sustained severe injuries.
A wall collapse in Ghaziabad's Khoda killed a 38-year-old woman, Pannu Devi, and injured five others.
In Masuri area, a 50-year-old woman, Shammem, slipped into a drain during the rain, sustaining severe head injuries....
