New Delhi, May 2 -- Another newborn Asiatic lion cub died at the Delhi zoo on Thursday, making it the second death in the four-cub litter, officials said. The cubs were born at the zoo on Sunday. One of the remaining cubs is being hand-reared by the zoo veterinary team, while the other is said to be healthy and is with the mother, five-year-old Mahagauri. Zoo officials said the male lion cub which died was visibly weak on Thursday and was shifted to the zoo hospital. "The lion cub was not moving much. Hence, after separating the mother from the cub very carefully, it was admitted to the hospital. The cub was found to be dehydrated and in a critical condition and died later in the day despite best efforts," an official aware of the matter said. On Tuesday, one cub was declared dead, with zoo authorities stating it was born underdeveloped. On the same day, a cub was also shifted to the hospital for hand-rearing. "We continue to rear the third cub and it is doing well. The fourth cub is with the mother and both are being monitored via a CCTV camera," the zoo official cited above added. The birth of the four cubs to Mahagauri and five-year-old lion Maheshwar is the first case of successful breeding of the species at the zoo since 2009. Mahagauri and Maheshwar were brought to Delhi Zoo from Gujarat's Junagadh in 2021. At the time, the two were only barely 1.5 years old. The zoo had received its first ever lion pair in 1969....
