PWD to revamp 8 Lodhi Rd stretches
New Delhi, Nov. 3 -- The public works department (PWD) is set to carry out large-scale strengthening work on Lodhi Road and adjoining avenues using recycled material and cold milling technology at an estimated cost of Rs.10 crore, officials said, adding that the monsoon rains have left most arterial stretches battered and pothole-riddled.
According to a tender floated by the department, the project involves upgrading eight key stretches of Lodhi Road, 4th Avenue, Jagan Nath Marg, Vardhmaan Marg, Sujan Mohinder Road, Hospital Road, 5th Avenue Road, and Chandu Lal Balmiki Road.
The work will be undertaken through the cold milling and recycling process, a technique that reuses reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) from old road layers to create new bituminous surfaces.
Officials said the recycled bituminous mix will comprise up to 30% reclaimed material blended with bitumen and about 8% waste plastic additives, making it both cost-effective and environment-friendly. The project, expected to be completed within four months, will be monitored through a network survey vehicle (NSV), which will record road condition data before and after the work to ensure transparency and assess performance.
"Recycling of bituminous layers not only reduces dependence on virgin aggregates but also improves durability. It's a modern solution to Delhi's recurring post-monsoon road damage," an official said.
Officials said Lodhi Road, a key corridor linking central and south Delhi and witnessing heavy traffic, had developed extensive cracks and potholes during the rains.
They added that post-repair monitoring would be crucial in evaluating the technology's long-term. Once the project begins, traffic diversions and partial closures are likely along Lodhi Road and adjoining avenues. Officials aware of the developments assured that the work would be carried out in stages to minimise inconvenience and that any diversions would be planned in coordination with the traffic police....
