Key Lutyens' Delhi roads to get Rs.83.9 cr facelift by 2026
New Delhi, Oct. 13 -- New Delhi The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) is planning a comprehensive Rs.83.9 crore revamp of key arterial roads in Lutyens' Delhi. The project will cover areas including the Connaught Place circles, Janpath, Sansad Marg, and KG Marg. It is being undertaken in consultation with the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI).
NDMC has issued five separate tenders for the recarpeting of five of its six road divisions: Connaught Place, R1, R2, R4, and R5. Officials stated that the bids will likely be finalised early next month.
An official said, "Bids for remaining roads will be issued soon and the overall project estimate cost will be around Rs.92 crore."
The tentative deadline for completion is March 31, 2026, though this may depend on restrictions related to the Graded Response Action Plan (Grap).
The road assessment for the project was carried out by CRRI in January and February this year, covering 79 major revenue roads.
A senior civic official confirmed that based on this survey, the redevelopment plan for entire New Delhi has been formulated. CRRI will also conduct third-party checks and supervision to ensure quality of work.
The CRRI report identified issues such as cracking, distresses, and weathering. It recommended milling, overlay, and repair work for at least 60 of these roads, including the outer circle of Connaught Place, Sansad Marg, Janpath, KG Marg, and Lodhi estate.
NDMC oversees a 1,298km-long road network and 52 rotaries in the Capital.
To minimise traffic disruption, civic officials said one road division at a time will be picked up for recarpeting. The recarpeting of Connaught Place will cost Rs.8.74 crore, R-1 division Rs.23.39 crore, R-2 Rs.23.12 crore, R-4 division Rs.24.86 crore, and R-5 division will cost Rs.24.86 crore.
An official noted, "Depending on the scale of work, the completion time will vary from four months to a year."
The project follows a Rs.4 crore agreement signed between NDMC and CRRI in September last year for the study and improvement of road infrastructure. Under this agreement, CRRI is assisting with structural evaluation of roads, supervising construction quality, and training engineers.
Specific findings from the CRRI report detail the poor condition of many roads. Under the Connaught Place division, all eight surveyed roads need rehabilitation. The Panchkuian Road extension was in the poorest condition, with longitudinal cracks and settlement. Sansad Marg was found distressed near CP, and cracking was observed on Janpath. The outer circle has cracks at approaches and middle lanes, while KG Marg was found to have a "hungry surface" with micro cracks.
In the R1 division, 18 roads were assessed and only four were found to need no intervention. Janpath Road from CP to Dr RP Road was heavily cracked with slight depressions.
The report mentioned, "Dr RP Road is heavily distressed due to NBCC construction work. Concrete deposits were also found and drainage needs to be improved."
Roads in the R2 division, such as the Golf Link colony road, were found in a dilapidated condition, being "heavily raveled" due to weathering with potholes and an undulated surface.
CRRI recommended reducing the road level at Golf Links due to drainage issues. In the R4 division, maximum damage was found at Bordoloi Road.
On Sardar Patel Marg, patching and longitudinal cracks were found on both sides, with 50-60mm milling recommended. Under the R5 division, three out of four roads, including Mandir Marg and Pandit Pant Marg, need rehabilitation, with only Talkatora road in good condition....
