Ghaziabad, July 27 -- Councillors of the Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation on Saturday alleged that despite the official deadline having passed, they have not received the minutes of the June 30 board meeting-raising suspicion over the delay, claim the protestors. The meeting, convened by mayor Sunita Dayal after a demand from 60-65 councillors, had a single agenda: the proposed hike in property tax under a newly implemented structure. The board had overwhelmingly rejected the hike. But the official minutes-expected to confirm this rejection-have yet to be made public. "There is absolutely no hint about the official minutes of the June 30 meeting, and no officer of the corporation is ready to provide a copy," said Himanshu Sharma, councillor from Ward 75. "With over 25 days passed and no minutes issued, it seems there is something fishy. A different alibi is being given each time," Sharma added. Councillor Neeraj Goel from Ward 88 alleged, "Officials are bent on increasing revenues through the property tax hike. With higher revenues, their chances of better transfers and postings improve. We feel they're hiding the board's rejection of the hike." Last week, councillors held a two-day protest at the municipal headquarters, demanding immediate release of the minutes. It was suspended after written assurance from officials, including chief tax assessment officer Sanjeev Sinha and additional municipal commissioner Jung Bahadur Yadav, that the minutes would be sent to the mayor by 10am on July 25. "I still have not received any copy of the minutes. the hike was rejected," said mayor Dayal. Yadav, who is also house secretary, said the minutes "will be prepared soon." A PIL against the hike is pending in the Allahabad high court, with the next hearing on July 29....
